When you're driving out to the Winnipeg Beach/Gimli area you won't want to miss stopping in to see this little art oasis Bulrushes Gallery, just 3.5 kilometers west of Winnipeg Beach amidst picturesque rural scenery . Recently included by Travel Manitoba in a list of ten amazing art galleries in Manitoba, Bulrushes Gallery, which opened last June, specializes in lost and forgotten art rediscovered for all to enjoy. The gallery’s collection includes roughly seven hundred pieces of paintings, drawings, and original prints including works by many Manitoba art legends as; Caroline Dukes, Bruce Head, Winston Leathers, , Tony Tascona, Kelly Clark, Bill Lobchuck and Arthur Adamson as well as important Canadian artists such as; Charles Pachter, Derek Besant, Flemming Jorgensen, Maxwell Bates, Gordan Smith, John Esler, Ed Bartram, Roslyn Swartzman , Gordan Marich, and David Umholtz. There are also hundreds of outstanding works by artists who while less well known are every bit as talented as their more established contemporaries.“Bulrushes wants to reintroduce Manitobans to all these gifted artists and their wonderful creations”, said gallery curator Tim Wall.
Bulrushes kick off this season with its exhibition (June 9 -12th)of incredible metal art by Selkirk artist Janet Dornian. The Gallery will be closed on Saturday June 4thso that it can get ready for the exhibition of striking metal art for both the home and outdoors. Dornian’s works range from small and sublime sculptural pieces of steel and stone to decorate the indoors to large, fantastic and whimsical works to enhance your outdoor spaces. Janet Dornian taps into her rural roots and morphs new and recycled metal such as farm implements into original works of art. Janet's work is at times influenced by her keen interest in ancient South American cultures, and she has created breathtaking Aztec heads and impressive outdoor wall hangings shaped by Mayan mythology. This beautiful metal art enables you to bring elements of nature indoors and also take art outside.
The entire Bulrushes collection is available for viewing on line by visiting the gallery website, www.bulrushesgallery.ca. You can wander through a collection of modernist, traditional, historic and contemporary works including an exceptional collection of modern and vintage original prints by some of Canada’s foremost printmakers. “There is truly something for every taste and everything is priced so that fine art is available to everyone”, said gallery co-owner Don Rogers. “Great art does not need to come at a great price”, Rogers says. “That’s just one more thing that makes us unique.”
The gallery also features not only metal art but glass art, and both contemporary and vintage jewelry, and also showcases both mid-century and contemporary pottery, including whimsical pottery figures by gifted Winnipeg artist Cindy Flynn.
